Siena is likely Italy's loveliest medieval city. Siena's heart is its central piazza known as Il Campo, known worldwide for the famous Palio run here, a horse race run around the piazza two times every summer, the 2nd of July and the 16 of August.
The Campo is dominated by the Palazzo Pubblico and its tower, Torre del Mangia. The Palazzo Pubblico osts the city's municipal offices, the entrance to the Torre del Mangia and the Civic Museum. If you feel energetic, a climb up the over 500 steps will reward you with a wonderful view of Siena and its surroundings.
Walking around Siena is particularly pleasant. Each borough is a Contrada (district) of the Palio, and each symbol is proudly displayed on front doors and shop windows. The passion for the Palio can be breathed on the air all year round. If you have time, visit a Contrada and its district church to experience its essence.
